Shani focuses on the story behind her piece. She paints from her experience and what she has gone through during her life. That is an important aspect of who she is. Shani also focuses on position. During her process she experiments with her mirror and points it at different parts of her face. She does this in order to see how the light hits her face and to duplicate that image onto her art piece. Shani's process isn't rushed, it takes time and is thought out. She often paints something, then pauses, and takes a step back. Sometimes the distance she moves is far and sometimes it is close. She does this in order to see her work at different angles, to collect her thoughts, and to have a mini-reflection. Shani repeats this multiple times. She also often takes breaks to separate herself from the piece and to talk with someone else.
Shani says she wouldn't do anything if she knew what she was going to do. Maybe she says that because she thinks it might become boring and there might be nothing left to explore. I believe she states this because art is a journey. Ideas don't always have to be set in stone. I have also experienced this. As I go through my process, I always wind up changing things and they don't come out looking how I first envisioned. I believe that Shani may feel the same way because after starting a piece unexpected ideas and different perspectives become evident. When Shani says "sweet sadness" she means thinking about her past and the pain she derives from that. When times like those are remembered she reflects upon them and they give her ideas. Her experiences that hurt her are sometimes her inspiration.
I believe the "essence" Shani is describing is the vibe she gets. She is talking about the meaning she wants to capture in her piece. It is as if she feels a certain way, and she wants to put those feelings into her artwork, in order to allow the reader to experience them. It all comes back to the story she want to tell the readers. Shani wants to see the piece "freshly" and "out of context." I believe this means to see it in a different light or perspective. Being limited to one perspective can make the art piece lose its meaning. Looking at something in different ways gives something multiple meanings. Shani really taught me an important lesson. From her I learned that you need to have a passion in your life that fulfills you. Shes said that it is what made her a good mother to her two daughters. Keeping yourself invested in an interest is crucial because you will be able to please yourself and in turn please others around you.
